best inca trail tour companies - las mejores operadoras del camino inca

Best inca trail tour companies 2026

The Inca trail tour companies that operate in the Inca Trail Network must register and have the authorization of the National Service  of Natural Protected Areas by the State (SERNANP) to operate officially. This year 2026 there are exactly 226 travel companies operating the Inca trail.

Getting licensed by the government is a complicated and stringent process for the protection of tourists. The government evaluates your entire business operation and office site, if you paid taxes, they check the tour guides, porters, chefs, camping equipment, firt aid equipment and preparedness and if we are we part of the union. Those companies that do not have a tour operator license for the Inca Trail, do not have one because they cannot meet the standards required by the government.

There are also agencies that have been operating the Inca trail for more years. Older agencies are given a 7-10 year permit. The old agencies are usually the ones that have groups every day and guarantee your trip to the Inca trail. They are the most recommended.

Why booking early the Inca trail ?

Hike the Inca Trail is a bucket list worthy event, but it involves a lot of advance planning. In order to hike this amazing trail, you must book through a licensed operator, like Cusco Andean Hike, to secure permits for your trek. Permits are extremely limited and sell out almost immediately. Here are some answers to the most common questions about this process.

What do I need to hike the Inca Trail?

You NEED a permit from the government in order to hike the Inca Trail 4days or 2 days.

How many permits does the government give out?

500 permits per day for the Inca Trail. EVERYONE needs a permit, including your crew, which means that only about 200 – 300 visitors will be able to start this hike every day.

Once I book a permit, can I change my start date?

No. The government does not allow us to change any dates for permits. If you need to change your date, you will need to purchase a new permit and your new date is likely going to be sold out.

Shouldn’t I wait until October to book then?

Definitely not! If you know that you want to do this hike, booking soon will ensure you get a permit. The government is changing the rules all the time about when they will release permits and you want all your details in our system so we are ready for the moment we are notified. Plus, booking now ensures you get our current prices for next years trek.

Am I guaranteed to get my start date?

Unfortunately no, but by booking with a trusted company, you are in the best hands to make this happen. For the last three years we have been 98% successful in getting everyone’s first choice for a start date. But giving us a back up or two for possible starts does help us make sure that you get to do this hike. We will always work to get your top choice and notify you if this doesn’t happen (which will not be the case). If we weren’t successful at all, which has NEVER happened, we will refund your money entirely – 100%.

WHY SUCH HIGH DEMAND OF THE INCA TRAIL?

Travellers are not aware of the 500 permits per day limit in the Inca Trail. In addition, most travellers do not know that this limit applies not only to trekkers entering the trail each day but also to all support staff required – guides, cooks, and porters.

To preserve the integrity of this famous part of what the Inca called the Qhapaq Ñan, no hooved pack animals are allowed along the majority of Inca Trail.

Therefore, have to rely on people (support staff) to help us carry camping gear, food, sleeping and cooking supplies. Better known as ¨chaskis¨ in ancient times and well renowned for their lightning running speed along the paths to relay messages across the vast expanse of the Inca Empire, support staff is vital to the operating of treks on the Inca Trail.
Due to such regulation, the permits required for any one group of trekkers, requires double if not triple the permits (of that of the number of trekkers) just for the support staff.

Now that you know the reason behind the Inca Trail´s high demand, you will perhaps feel a bigger need to book your permits sooner than later!.

ANTONIO BANDERASEN EL CAMINO INCA - ANTONIO BANDERAS INCA TRAIL

Antonio Banderas hiked the Inca Trail trek with his daughter.

The Spanish Hollywood actor arrived at Machu Picchu with his daughter Stella del Carmen, along the Inca trail, after 4 days of trekking.

Father and daughter demonstrated their adventurous spirit by traveling one of the most famous treks in Peru, together with a team of porters, cooks and tour guides.

Being one of the first most recognized actors to make this Inca trail to Machupicchu for four days of walking.

They stayed together the entire time while walking through the lost city of the Incas, Machupicchu, considered one of the wonders of the world. Then they went to rest at a hotel in Aguas Calientes.

During his visit to Peru – Cusco, the actor also visited the archaeological site of Ninamarca and the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Carmen in Paucartambo of which he is a devotee.

Specifically, I visited the colonial temple of Paucartambo and participated for a few minutes in the traditional dance pilgrimage to the cemetery of this town, in Cusco, which celebrates the festival of the Virgin of Carmen.

Banderas previously visited Lima to participate in a charity activity in which he announced that he hoped to return to Peru soon to visit Cusco.

His presence in the ancient capital of the Incas has shown him to be friendly with the people who recognize him from the Inca city and he even agreed to take photographs with the population who approached him when they recognized him.

Itinerary

DAY I CUSCO - KM82 - LLAQTAPATA - HATUNCHACA

DAY I CUSCO – KM82 – LLAQTAPATA – HATUNCHACA

We will start early to go to the town of Ollantaytambo where we will have a stop to have breakfast, and then go to kilometer 82 or Piscacucho (beginning of the Premium Inca Trail), we slowly advance along the banks of the Urubamba river with excellent views of the Verónica peak. (5,900m/19,000ft). There will be a variety of native plants and birds around us during this stretch.

As we continue to follow the trail over fairly flat terrain, we come to the small community of Miskay. From here we will gradually ascend for 40 min and finally we will see, from the highest part of a viewpoint, where we will appreciate the archaeological center of Llactapata (Patallacta). Then we will go down to the canyon to have lunch close to Llactapata.

From Llactapata it is an easy 2 hour walk to our camp in Hatunchaca. Where we will spend our first night on the Inca trail

  • Meals: Lunch/Dinner
  • Accommodations: Camping

  • Minimum altitude: 2980 m/ 9776 ft
  • Distance walk: 10 km/ 6 miles

  • Difficulty: Moderate
DAY II HATUNCHACA - LLULLUCHAPAMPA

DAY II HATUNCHACA – LLULLUCHAPAMPA

We will start early with a coca tea or coffee in the tent. To then have a nutritious breakfast. Most of the groups would be advancing the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu today and heading to Paso de la Mujer Muerta, the highest point of the trek and one of the hardest and longest climbs on the Inca Trail. We are going to take things at a more leisurely pace and our goal for today is a camp just before the pass, Llulluchapampa. This breaks up the most difficult section over two days, making the climb significantly easier.

On the way to Llulluchapampa, we will once again go off the beaten track to visit the least visited of all the sites on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the Inca fort of Paucarcancha and Patahuasi. As we ascend to Llulluchapampa, we will pass through several biozones, including the low sierra, the Uncas forest (a native Andean tree), the cloud forest, and the high puna. There are many opportunities to view a variety of plants and birds and if we are lucky we may also see white tailed deer. Like the first night, our camp for the night is peaceful and quiet, with most hikers camping in the valley below or on the other side of the pass.

  • Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
  • Accommodations: Camping
  • Maximum altitude: 3800M/ 13825 ft
  • Minimum altitude: 2980 m/9776 ft
  • Distance walk: 7 km/4.34 miles
  • Approximate walking time: 7 hours
  • Difficulty: Challenging
DAY III LLULLUCHAPAMPA - DEAD WOMAN'S PASS - PHUYUPATAMARCA

DAY III LLULLUCHAPAMPA – DEAD WOMAN’S PASS – PHUYUPATAMARCA

This day will be the longest and goes through two overpasses; Fortunately for us, we chose to camp last night in a place where we are almost at the first pass, the Dead Woman Pass – Warmiwañusca (4,215 m/13,825 ft), the highest point of the trek. Then, after passing the second pass, Runcuraccay Pass (3,950m/12,959ft), the hike is easy with very little up and down to contend with.

Along the Inca trail we will have the best views and landscapes of our trip and it includes visits to two Inca sites, Runcuraccay and Sayacmarca (3,850 m/12,628 ft). There are fantastic views of high snow-capped peaks for most of the day and the surrounding cloud forest.

Our lunch spot will be Chakicocha and we continue our adventure after our delicious lunch to our Phuyupatamarca camp (3680 m/12,073 ft), from where we will get our first views of Machu Picchu mountain and the beautiful sunset. The sunset views from here are fantastic and once again the camp is quiet with most hikers camping closer to Machu Picchu.

  • Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
  • Accommodations: Camping
  • Maximum altitude: 4215m/ 13828ft
  • Minimum altitude: 3680 m/12073 ft
  • Distance walk: 15 km/9.3 miles
  • Approximate walking time: 8 to 9 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate
DAY IV PHUYUPATAMARCA - WIÑAYWAYNA - MACHU PICCHU

DAY IV PHUYUPATAMARCA – WIÑAYWAYNA – MACHU PICCHU

After our breakfast; We will begin our descent down the steps of the Inca Trail to visit 3 archaeological centers (Phuyupatamarca, Intipata and Wiñay Wayna) before arriving at Machu Picchu at the end of the day. With only a short distance to go, you will really have the opportunity to see these sites in detail and learn more about the Inca culture and Machu Picchu. The area around these Inca sites is also rich in wildlife and with only a handful of people on this stretch of the trail at this time of day, it is the perfect opportunity to try and spot some of the more elusive species.

Once we arrive at Wiñaywayna we will have our lunch, then we will continue our trek for about 1 hour and a half on a part of the Inca Trail that is relatively flat, with small ups and downs along the way. Then we will arrive at Puerta del Sol (2,720 m/8,920 ft) which is called Intipunku in Quechua. This is where we will have our first view of Machu Picchu and from there we will head to the ruins to take the bus to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you will check into your clean and comfortable hotel. The town’s natural hot springs are a great way to spend an afternoon or evening if time is available before dinner. Dinner will be in the best restaurant.

  • Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
  • Maximum altitude: 2720m/ 8923ft
  • Minimum altitude: 2050 m/6725 ft
  • Distance walk: 11km/7 miles
  • Approximate walking time: 2hours
  • Difficulty: Easy

THE BEST 6 INCA TRAIL TIPS

You have decided to fulfill one of your dreams: make the mythical trip along the Inca Trail to the citadel of Machu Picchu. So here are the best 6 tips before doing the Inca Trail.

We want to be part of your plans by giving you 6 tips before embarking on the Inca Trail, taking into account that it must be a vital experience in which you will never forget all the good things you will experience. That is why we will give you these simple and practical tips so that nothing can spoil it.

1.-Hire a good travel agency.

Many consider that doing the Inca Trail is freely accessible, we tell you that it can only be done with an authorized travel agency, in order to find out which companies are apt to operate this route, you can access the official website http://www.machupicchu.gob.pe.

Likewise, we tell you that Cusco Andean hike, has the license to operate the Inca Trail in its various modalities. We provide a quality service in small groups; which will allow you to complete your trip fully and without any setbacks, so make the decision and hire the Cusco Andean Hike we assure you that you will not regret it.

2.-Book 4 to 3 months in advance.

It is very important to book the Inca Trail due to high demand, the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary grants 500 permits per day, between porters and guides.

So as soon as you make the decision, do not forget to make the reservation of flights, accommodation and the route. This route attracts thousands of people from all over the world, so there is usually a lot of demand most of the year.

3.-Acclimatization.

It is advisable to arrive days before your excursion so that you can acclimatize. For several days, you will be thousands of meters above sea level. It means that your body needs to slowly acclimatize to avoid annoying altitude sickness.

We recommend to stay in the city of Cusco for at least 2 days before starting the trek to acclimatize well. You should know that the date of the Inca Trail cannot be changed and there is no refund in case of absence, so it is essential to take precautions so as not to miss the opportunity to do it.

4.- Appropriate clothing and footwear.

The climate of the Andean zone tends to change suddenly. Although the sun may appear, once it hides behind a cloud, the temperature drops rapidly.

For this reason, it is important to wear a coat/jacket at night, since the cold can be harmful.

Special trekking footwear is essential for the road. Pay attention, cover your ankles to give you better stability. This is important since the footwear must withstand 8 hours of walking per day and the cobbled path is often difficult and slippery.

5.- Trekking Poles.

A pair of walking sticks will help you a lot throughout the trip. If you don’t have practice with them, you will soon learn how to use them. They will help you move more safely and comfortably by lightening some of the weight and giving you extra stability. You can also buy them in Ollantaytambo, as well as rent them.

6.-Essential accessories.

It is not entirely advisable to consume the water from the springs along the Inca Trail. Bring your own thermos or water bottle filled with mineral water.

CHECK THE PERMITS IN REAL TIME INCA TRAIL AVAILABILITY

Inca Trail Availability 2026

BOOK YOUR INCA TRAIL 2026 NOW!!! to secure your spot.

How many versions of the inca trail are there?

There are different types of inca trail, depending on how much time you have.

Am I guaranteed to get my start date?

Unfortunately no, but by booking with a trusted company, you are in the best hands to make this happen. For the last three years we have been 99% successful in getting everyone’s first choice for a start date. But giving us a back up or two for possible starts does help us make sure that you get to do this hike. We will always work to get your top choice and notify you if this doesn’t happen (which will not be the case). If we weren’t successful at all, which has NEVER happened, we will refund your money entirely – 100%.

WHY SUCH HIGH DEMAND?
