Choquequirao was designed with 9 zones. These areas were built as small cities surrounding a square to which all the streets of each city would end.

The following areas have been identified: the upper zones (Hanan), the storage areas (QOLQA), Plaza de Armas (Huacaypata), the lower square (Hurin), the terrace system where the crops used for cultivation (Shaqra Anden ), the ceremonial platform (Ushnu) and the houses of the priests at the bottom of the hill. Due to all these findings, it is presumable that Choquequirao was a great political and economic center that has been used as a center of trade and culture of exchange between the coast, the mountains and the jungle.
