Is one of  the  best alternative  hikes after the Classic inca trail  in Cusco, It is a hike of 47 km or 26 miles. Located northwest of the city of cusco Salkantay is the highest peak of the mountain range 6271 m./ 20569ft.

its name means (wild mountain) and in time of the Incas was one of the most important Apu. It is a hike oriented to those who like the challenges and push their limits to the edge and Hikers who like to experience and witness the diverse microclimates and landscapes that the track has to offer in one trip.

Itinerary

DAY I CUSCO - SORAYPAMPA - SOYROCOCHA

DAY I CUSCO – SORAYPAMPA – SOYROCOCHA

Cusco Andean Hike will pick you up early in the morning 5:30 am from your  hotel in a private Bus and take you to the starting point  of your trip to Soraypampa; The travel time to this place is around 4 hours.

we have a stop in Mollepata is small town, we will make a brief stop to explore the streets and buy some things that we will need for the hike. After  that we will back to the bus to continue our journey to soraypampa an hour and a half approx, when we arrive to Soraypampa (3920 masl), we will see in the distance the Apu Salkantay.

Once here, we will decide the path to follow for the trekking based on the physical condition of the participants.

First option:

climb a mountain through the left side with the opportunity to see the beauty of the famous  Andean lagoon Humantay and other mountains that surround it. Finally, we will descend the same route and take our usual trail to our camp.

Second Option:

To skip the ascent to the mountain and follow the traditional path that will take us directly to our camp.

On the way to our camp, we will see the local people, we will learn about their traditional lifestyle, where livestock farming and agriculture is of great importance and the reason why it is still practiced today.

As we continue, we will increasingly approach one of the most important mountains in southern Peru. The Great Salkantay, known as “The Guardian of the Andes”. Then we will continue uphill through a winding road to Lake Soyrococha (4480 masl), place where we will spend the night.

DIA II SOYROCOCHA - COLLPAPAMPA

DIA II SOYROCOCHA – COLLPAPAMPA

After waking up surrounded by the mountains and the lake, we will have a fortifying breakfast and we will begin with our trek gradually ascending for about 1 ½ hours. Towards the highest point of the hike. The Salkantay Pass (4,600 m.s.n.m). From here, we will have a panoramic view of the Andes, its mountain ranges, glaciers, lakes and streams. Feel the true magic of the Andes.
After a well-deserved rest, we will descend the mountain little by little until arriving at HuayraMachay (3,900 m.) leaving behind the Salkantay. After 2 hrs. We will arrive at our stop for lunch.

Later, we will continue descending through an area belonging to the jungle higher part known as “Andenes” (3,800 masl)

Here, we will be able to see vast vegetation, bamboo forests and a variety of wild orchids, bromeliads and Other flowers typical of the area. Soon, the second camp is within easy reach: Collpapampa (2,950 m.)

This is an easy hike through the top of the jungle, where we will see vast flora and fauna, especially fruits like  avocado, granates, wild strawberries, coffee, and bamboo. The climate is humid and warm which is characteristic of the semi-tropical zone.

Also we will see along the way some communities where they still live freely and respecting nature. On this day, we will have the opportunity to see coffee plantations and participate in the coffee experience  the processes of this plant and you can make your own coffee.

It will be a day filled with learning experiences. Our camp Lucmabamba  (2000 m.) usually has a much warmer climate, since it is in the humid part of the jungle

After a delicious breakfast, we will begin our hike following the traditional Inca Trail. We will climb the mountain little by little for 2 hours to the archaeological site of Llactapata (2.749 m.) From here, we will be able to finally see the citadel of Machu Picchu, a part of the traditional Inca Trail and the river Urubamba that is rolled in all the Valley.

After a brief moment to rest, we will descend for 3 hours through a winding road between narrow and slippery spaces until we get to the valley (hydroelectric) Here, we will take the train to Aguas Calientes to a hotel where we will pass the night . Maybe you would like to visit the  Hot Springs in the evening.

After breakfast, we will take the first bus to Machu picchu so that we can arrive early to see the sunrise in this magical place. The guided tour through the interior of the citadel will be around 2 hours.

After the guided tour you will have free time to visit the city for places you did not see or maybe have a ticket to visit Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu mountain, you will have time to do it. In the afternoon, we will take the return bus to Aguas Calientes.

Once in the city, you can take lunch and later you will go to train station to take the train Peru Rail. Expedition to Ollantaytambo where you will be waiting for our transfer with our bus to take you back to Cusco – Hotel

Packing list Make sure to pack only what is strictly necessary for the hike to Machu Picchu itself, and leave your other belongings at the hotel.

What to pack for the Salkantay trek?

Important items to pack for the Salkantay trek to Machu picchu.

  • Original Passport (the same name and number passport that you booked).
  • Back Pack (capacity of 36 liters).
  • Sleeping Bag that resists up to -5° celsius (23° fahrenheit) in case you are not bringing your  own, you can rent one from Cusco Andean Hike.
  • Clothes for Trekking: Hiking boots, waterproof clothes (short, pants, rain jacket), T- shirt, and light sweaters. also bring clothes and a warm sweater to change into when we rest at the campsite, preferably made of cotton to keep you warm, especially for the first two nights. when you are hiking it is best to use your waterproof gear.
  • Hiking Poles. In case you do not own any, you can rent
  • Rubber tip.
  • 3 plastic bags to be able to keep your clothes separatein these 3 categories: clean, wet and dirty
  • Toiletries: Ensure you bring enough of everything you will need for the entire trek: soap, a toothbrush, toothpaste, wet wipes, a towel and antibacterial gel.
  • Medication: If you are currently taking specific medication, please bring enough with you for the duration of your sta. We recommend you pack some altitude sickness prevention tablets such us aspirine, coramina diamox, sorochipills or acetazolamina, anti-blister gel is also a good idea to avoid getting excessive blisters on your feet from the uphill hiking, since if this gets out of hand it could compromise your participation in the trk.
  • For those who are staying over in Aguas Calientes: Remember to bring clean clothes for your stay after the hike ends. In case you would like to visit the relaxing hot springs in Aguas Calientes. do not forget to bring swimwear and a towel.
