The Chinchero – Maras – Moray – Ollantaytambo circuit is another pleasant setting in the Cusco region that all travelers must visit. This place is home to magnificent buildings from the Inca and Pre-Inca times, as well as large plateaus and snow-capped mountains along the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Overview
Maras Moray tour & Machu picchu 2 days
Chinchero (Land of great weavers)
Only 45 minutes from Cusco, Chinchero is famous because of its local market, historic church, and agricultural terraces. The majority of the inhabitants are Quechua descendants who are mainly dedicated to agriculture and weaving. Chinchero produces the finest textiles in the region using Andean designs, natural colors, and ancient weaving techniques.
Moray (Inca Laboratory)
This breathtaking ancient monument, situated at 3,500 meters (11,500 feet), is made up of four gigantic circular terraces resembling Roman amphitheaters, each with its own irrigation system. Although the function of these terraces is uncertain, it is thought that they served as “greenhouses” for agricultural experimentation, allowing the adaptation of various crops to different microclimates and plants due to the significant differences between each terrace’s temperature.
Salt mines (Maras Salineras)
On an impossibly steep mountain slope, the Salineras have flourished since pre-Inca times; the inhabitants of Maras gather salt in the almost 3000 ponds using the same techniques as their predecessors. It takes approximately a month to deposit the salty water daily in the pools to be evaporated until it reaches about 10 centimeters in height before being collected and distributed to local markets.
Ollantaytambo (Inca Citadel)
Ollantaytambo is located 94 kilometers from Cusco and is surrounded by towering mountains, small cobblestone streets, and stunning Inca ruins. It is the only citadel continually inhabited since Inca times (the 14th century); therefore, it is referred to as the last living Inca city. During the Spanish Conquest, it served as a stronghold in the Battle of Ollantaytambo.
